ISIS Mapping: Duke Maps & Tours

The Duke Tour Project began with the interactive Duke map created by ISIS Capstone students in 2005, led by former ISIS Program Director Casey Alt and OIT Project manager Jess Mitchell. This was followed up by the ISIS Capstone students in 2007, who, led by ISIS Program Director Victoria Szabo and Mitchell, modeled many buildings on East Campus and created Google Earth movies to share their work.

The latest iteration of ISIS Mapping was undertaken by the ISIS Capstone students in 2010. The course, taught by Szabo with help from TA Michal Koszycki, Duke '09, focused on the creation of media rich representation of the Duke campus in an interactive environment. Student modeled key buildings in Sketchup, placed them on a map in Google Earth, and created informational videos using their own models plus additional materials culled from various sources on campus. The goal of the project was to create a set of videos that could be used by Admissions and other campus entities to give prospective students and members of the public a different perspective on the Duke Campus. The ultimate hope is that the maps will be adopted by Duke's Office of News and Communications.

In Summer 2010 Koszycki and Rebecca Wood continued to develop 3D models to add to the map. In Fall 2010 the work continues as well.

In addition, Duke Graduate Medical Education is exploring the idea of modeling hospital buildings and creating informational resources with the help of the ISIS Program. We will be looking for student workers to help with that task as well!
